Panic Attacks More Common In Smokers

Family History A family history of anxiety and panic attacks can increase a person’s risk of experiencing symptoms. Mayoclinic.com suggests that genetics may play a role in the development of these disorders. Stress Significant life stress can trigger anxiety and panic attacks. According to MayoClinic.com, some possible stresses include the death or serious illness of a significant person and major life changes such as adding a baby to the family. The increase of stress hormones during these situations creates a sense of emergency within a person’s body that can induce anxiety and trigger a panic attack. Abuse and Trauma According to MayoClinic.com, having a history of physical or sexual abuse can increase the likelihood of developing anxiety and panic attacks. Experiencing a traumatic event, such as an accident, rape, a house fire or burglary, can also trigger the onset of anxiety and panic attacks.

In an interview seeking objective comment, clinical psychologist Benjamin Fialkoff, PhD, tells WebMD that the study findings appear to be in line with his experience in treating patients with panic disorder. “It doesn’t surprise me in view of the findings that smoking increases stress,” he said. “What we have in a panic response is the body’s stress response going full out. … In general, you don’t feel a soothing, calming feeling after you have a cigarette.” Fialkoff says he prefers a combination treatment for patients with panic disorder. He refers those patients willing to take medications to a physician for a mild tranquilizer and an antidepressant.

The researchers defined full-blown panic attacks as sudden fear, anxiety , or extreme discomfort accompanied by four or more DSM-defined panic attack symptoms. A total of 330 patients reported experiencing full-blown panic attacks over the 6 months before the study, and 273 had experienced limited-symptom panic attacks (anxiety plus 13 panic attack symptoms). Researchers determined the possible risk for coronary heart disease after adjustment for all relevant risk factors, including smoking, hypertension, body-mass index, depression history, and physical activity. The risk for subsequent heart disease was over 4 times higher, and over 3 times higher for stroke, in women who had experienced full-blown panic attacks than in those without panic histories, but not in women who didnt have full-blown panic attacks but merely symptoms of anxiety. Depression was not associated with cardiovascular events after adjustment for panic attacks. The researchers determined that panic attacks are relatively common among postmenopausal women. They also appear to be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in older women.

The men of the 295th were well prepared, relatively well armed, well dug in, and the German advance units were beginning to overextend themselves. But then as day began to turn to dusk a rumour began to spread throughout the French lines. The Germans were already there. In fact, tanks had been spotted behind them. In a matter of minutes they would be cut off. What followed became known as the Tank Panic, or the phenomene d’hallucination collective. The troops turned and ran. Their heavy artillery followed them.

I’ve decided to go for my degree in politics, philosophy and economics, and the focus required keeps anxiety at bay. The Open University is sensitive to students’ individual needs, and the fact that I have taken to philosophy like a duck to water has boosted my confidence. I also do voluntary work online, as helping others helps me. Meanwhile, I’m adding to my CV for when life gets better. I cannot erase the stigma attached to mental health disorders, but I can make myself more marketable and hope for brighter days. They will come. Practically everything can be overcome.

Daniel Born/AP Photo Copy Another complication has temporarily halted the Oscar Pistorius trial, after the trial judge ordered Pistorius be sent for a mental health screening. The order was given after Dr. Merryll Vorster testified for the defense and said that Pistorius has general anxiety disorder, a psychiatric condition that could make the athlete more likely to fight a threatening situation than flee it. Get the Latest News on the Oscar Pistorius Murder Trial But experts say Pistorius will have to undergo extensive testing to be diagnosed with the condition. Youre looking for things that would supercharge that nervous system and leave it more vulnerable, said George Everly, associate professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. You can have chronic exposure or traumatic event — either one works. Everly said some people with the disorder have a genetic history or have experienced traumatic events that make them hyper-sensitive to perceived threats. In severe cases, people can feel so afraid that they want to protect themselves in seemingly overzealous ways, he said, from installing extra security alarms to amassing weapons. Think of a lightning bolt going through electric currents [of the brain], he said.

Ebay Cyber Attack Panic Plunges Site Into Near Meltdown As Users Rush To Change Passwords – Mirror Online

Psychiatrist Dr. Merryll Vorster said events during Pistorius’ life, including the amputation of his lower legs as a baby and his late mother’s habit of sleeping with a gun under her pillow, contributed to his “increasing stress.” “Overall, Mr. Pistorius appears to be a mistrustful and guarded person,” Vorster testified. She said the Olympic athlete displayed “escalating levels of anxiety” through his life when she interviewed him this month. Vorster said she also spoke to members of Pistorius’ family, some of his friends and his agent. Pistorius’ defense said at the outset of its case that it would show his feelings of “vulnerability” and his disability contributed to him shooting Steenkamp.

And millions of customers have still not received emails warning them details were stolen – 24 hours after news of the security breach was leaked. The huge number of users trying to change passwords caused eBays servers to slow right down, leaving millions of accounts potentially open to attack. Chartered accountant Richard Murphy said: eBay say I must reset my password. When I try to they say that’s not possible because too many people are trying to reset their passwords. Twitter user TweetieKaz wrote: Went to eBay to change my password but couldn’t due to traffic… I hope I can get that done soon. As the Mirror reported on Wednesday, the online market place was attacked by cyber crooks in late February and early March, but eBay said it only became aware of the breach earlier in May. It said mountains of data had to be sifted before it could let its 223 million registered users know. User names, encrypted passwords, email addresses, dates of birth, addresses and phone numbers were all illegally accessed but the company moved to reassure customers no financial information was compromised. eBay also told customers to change log-in details on other websites where they use the same password.

Oscar Pistorius Has Anxiety Disorder, Defense Psychiatrist Says During Murder Trial – Cbs News

My anxiety disorder is a “gift” from the person who raped me and tried to take my life, combined with a (separate) abusive relationship. It is thought that genetics can play a role if you have a close relative with generalised anxiety disorder , it is five times more likely that you, too, will experience anxiety at some point. Trauma, domestic violence, child abuse and bullying can trigger GAD, as can drug or alcohol misuse and long-term painful health conditions such as arthritis. Trying to get help isn’t easy. However, if my experiences sound familiar, do talk to your GP. If you don’t ask for help, you will be dealing with it on your own so you might as well create some light at the end of the tunnel. Anxiety is not something you can snap out of.
