Heart Palpitations: Is It Afib Or A Panic Attack? – Everyday Health

Pistorius is charged with premeditated murder and faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted. Vorster’s testimony also dealt with what she said was Pistorius’ fear of crime and how, because he was a double amputee, he reacted to perceived threats in a different way to other people. She noted Pistorius’ mother, who died when he was a teenager, slept with a gun in her bed and also had a fear of being attacked in her home. Cross-examining Vorster at the start of the eighth week of the trial, prosecutor Nel asked if she was saying Pistorius had a mental illness and should undergo a 30-day period of observation, and if he was changing his defense to one of “diminished responsibility.” Nel also asked the psychiatrist if someone who was suffering from an anxiety order of the kind that she had diagnosed in Pistorius, and also had access to guns, would be a danger to society. Vorster said the person would, indeed, be a danger. Talking specifically about the shooting of Steenkamp, Vorster said Pistorius was more likely to try and “fight” what he thought was an intruder than run away, because his disability meant it was harder for him to flee. Pistorius was on his stumps when he fired four times through the toilet stall door with his licensed 9 mm pistol, killing Steenkamp.

You may have extra stress at work or in your family. Although the crisis eventually goes away and the stress passes, an unexplained feeling of anxiety may last for months or years. Symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder include: restlessness; irritability; poor concentration; muscle tension; sleep problems. A wide range of anxiety-related physical symptoms may seem like symptoms of heart disease, respiratory illness, digestive diseases and other medical illnesses. I recommend speaking with your primary care doctor. He or she can evaluate whether there is any medical illness contributing to how poorly you feel. If all that checks out, get a referral to a mental health professional who can discuss your treatment options.

Seek medical help if you think you have afib or panic symptoms . It’s important for a doctor to differentiate between the two conditions. If your heart starts racing, your mind might, too: Is this a panic attack? Is this a heart problem? Sometimes it’s hard to tell even for doctors. The irregular heartbeat known as atrial fibrillation (afib), a physical disorder, shares some symptoms with a panic attack, an emotional problem, said John Day, MD, director of Heart Rhythm Services at Intermountain Medical Center in Salt Lake City. Pounding in your chest, difficulty breathing, chest pain or discomfort, and feeling dizzy or lightheaded are panic attack symptoms that overlap with afib symptoms.
